Fans will never forget some of the moments that defined his career between 1984 and 2003. There were more contest-winning dunks, game-winning shots, and culture-defining instances than we can recount here. But it all started with the original Air Jordan signature basketball shoe that Nike released in 1985.
The Black/Red sneaker changed the way we looked at basketball shoes and instilled a certain rebellious attitude in all who wore them. When we put them on, we were telling the world that we were living by our own rules on our way to doing something great.
Back again
The original Air Jordan – as with many of MJ’s signature editions that followed – was so popular that Nike began re-releasing it as the Jordan Retro 1 in 1994. Jordan became a brand of its own in 1997 and released variations on the originals with shoes like the Jordan AJ 1 Mid, which features everything that made the original great but with an ankle collar that stood a little lower than the original.
That makes the shoe a little more wearable with a wider variety of outfits. And it still includes the Wings logo that was MJ’s original mark, and the Swoosh that was only ever prominent on his first shoe.
